During cleaning work on the morning of August 16, 2021, it was found that the Community Centre of the Jewish Congregation Adass Jisroel in Berlin-Mitte, Tucholsky St. 40 had been shot; the bullet hole is visible on a window on the 2nd floor, a bullet was found. The time of the shot is not known.
The affected room is the reception and registration room for visitors and users of the library, archive and documentation department of the community. In the room there is also a table tennis table where children and youngsters play at different times.
The police was notified immediately. The department for state security has taken over the investigation.
The community expects the responsible Berlin authorities to take the necessary personnel, technical, constructional and electronic security measures to protect the Community Centre and its people.
If an attack is targeted at a Jewish community centre, then it is a hate crime – that is, a crime involving anti-Semitic motives. An anti-Semitic hate crime must be assumed.
Neither the Senator for Culture, Dr. Lederer, competent in the city government for churches and religious communities, nor the Governing Mayor Michael Müller have so far contacted the community.
